Strong Foundations

Strong Foundations – The Key to All Learning at St Helen's Catholic Primary School

At St Helen's Catholic Primary School, we recognise that strong foundations are the key to successful learning, enabling every child to flourish and achieve their full potential. We understand that children need to develop secure knowledge, essential skills and positive learning behaviours before they can successfully move on to more complex learning. These foundations underpin everything we do and are carefully prioritised across our entire curriculum.
Our commitment to strong foundations begins in the Early Years, where children develop the communication, language, early literacy, mathematical understanding, physical development and personal, social and emotional skills that provide the building blocks for future success. These foundations are then systematically strengthened and built upon as children progress through each year group, ensuring that learning is carefully sequenced, knowledge is revisited and essential skills are embedded.
This commitment is evident in the practical implementation of our curriculum. Please click on the links below for further information

Our commitment is further supported through ongoing professional development and investment in staff expertise. This includes focused staff meetings, external specialist support, year-group training and opportunities for teachers to work collaboratively to strengthen curriculum delivery. For example, our work with specialists on Strong Foundations, handwriting, phonics and the teaching and our teaching and learning framework, The Light of Learning. This has helped to establish greater consistency in expectations and classroom practice. Regular learning walks, book scrutinies and pupil discussions enable leaders to evaluate the impact of this work and identify further opportunities for improvement.
Through carefully planned progression, high-quality teaching, explicit modelling, effective questioning, purposeful practice and timely assessment, teachers identify and address gaps in foundational knowledge before introducing further challenge. We place importance on consistency in expectations and approaches so that children experience a coherent journey of learning throughout their time at St Helen's.
Ultimately, our aim is to ensure that every child leaves St Helen's with the secure foundations, knowledge, skills, confidence and independence they need to embrace future learning. We do not view strong foundations as a separate element of our curriculum, but as the golden thread that runs through it, enabling every child to build upon what they know, deepen their understanding and achieve more.
