Reading

We establish secure foundations in phonics through consistent, systematic teaching, regular assessment and opportunities to apply phonics knowledge in reading and writing. Our chosen Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme is Essential Letters and Sounds. As children progress, fluency, accuracy, vocabulary and comprehension are explicitly developed so that reading becomes a tool for accessing the wider curriculum. Through using Phonics Tracker alongside our ELS programme regularly we are secure in knowing where each child is at and where to tailor our teaching.
Through embedding the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s (CLPE) programme The Power of Reading we engage children with high quality texts.
