Fine and Gross Motor Skills
Fine Motor Skills (including hand strength)
Gross Motor Skills (including core strength and arm/shoulder strength)
In order to develop strong writing skills we prioritise children’s opportunities for developing their fine motor skills. Exceptional opportunities are in place in classrooms; we also utilise Dough Disco and Squiggle to Wiggle programmes for progressive skill development. We have made strategic choices to ensure progression in the resources available in classrooms to develop fine motor skills, for example developments in malleable resources, different types of scissors, progressive construction kits and modelling opportunities.
Below show a couple of our mapped examples of decisions in resources or classroom opportunities that ensure progression in skills that support children to be ready to write.
Together, these experiences build the strength, control and dexterity needed for everyday tasks, especially handwriting.
